WHAT IS SKIMBOARDING?

Skimboarding, commonly referred to as “skimming”, is a popular boardsport that’s been a part of wave-riding culture since the 1920s. The concept is simple, but challenging to master. Run, send, and hop onto the skimboard— Glide across across the water's surface to meet an incoming breaking wave, and ride it back to shore.

Get on board and see what it’s all about!

How is skimming different from surfing?

Although both skimboarding and surfing involve standing on a board and riding over water, the two sports are fundamentally different.

Skimboarding is done in very shallow levels of water and is suited to waves that break on the shore. Surfing, on the other hand, takes advantage of waves generated by the ocean to propel us forward so it’s usually further from shore.

In skimming, we go from a running directly to standing on the board. No paddling is required. When surfing, we paddle out on our stomachs and then “pop up” into a standing position.

Skimboards are thinner, narrower, and shorter than surfboards. Skimboards – unlike surfboards – do not have fins.
